About Us

Naked Girls Reading began in Chicago in March 2009 as the creation of international showgirl Michelle L’Amour and Franky Vivid, and now has branches across the country and around the world. The New York chapter is produced by neo-burlesque superstar Nasty Canasta; it was opened in October 2009 to great acclaim, and in 2010 was named "New York's Best Story Hour" by the Village Voice.

Naked Girls Reading NYC is the perfect intimate live event: a monthly nude literary salon featuring in-the-buff readings by local burlesque luminaries, professional librarians, authors and other Naked Girls. Past themes have included Banned Books, Science Fiction and Tween Lit, as well as our annual holiday presentation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol

Our audiences are female and male, couples and groups of friends; they come for the joy of experiencing women reading aloud and unclothed. In the words of Michelle and Franky, "Naked Girls Reading is a group of beautiful ladies who love to read…naked. There’s something beautiful, something altogether more intimate, about a woman reading pretty much anything in her, well, altogether. It’s just that simple.

" ... burlesque artist Nasty Canasta and partners in striptease like Bunny Love and Peekaboo Pointe read in the nude, save for body glitter and stilettos, at Madame X in the West Village. 'It’s the old thing: come for the girls, stay for the stories,” Nasty Canasta said. “At first people get a little bit stuck on the fact that there’s a naked woman reading. But then they get into the piece and forget about it. You’re all just standing in the room, sharing literature.' " - The New York Times

• "Naked Girls Reading has clearly evolved into something more than just titillation. It is titillating, but after the first thrill of the initial disrobing, the pleasure of seeing beautiful women undressed fades besides the sense of intimacy achieved from someone bearing both their body and their soul at the same time. It was a remarkable experience." - Tor.com

"Great literature stripped bare" - Entertainment Weekly

“What did you get up to last Friday night? If you answered anything other than 'went to Naked Girls Reading,' you lose.” - NBC New York
“…paroxysms of delight. Seriously.” - Cultural Capitol

"Sure, there was plenty of skin on display, but the crowd (comprised of both male and female sci-fi buffs) seemed just as interested in hearing hilarious passages from "Hitchhiker's Guide" as they were in ogling unclothed lady business." - Asylum.com

“A sensual and pleasantly intellectual show.” - Washington Square News

"If you like reading and naked women, you'll love Naked Girls Reading." - NewYork.com

"It did what a good reading should." - elle.com

"These women are not merely eye candy. They are performers carefully acting out a script. They stand boldly in front of the audience, belting out intense action sequences before quieting down to a hushed whisper as the tension builds." - NYU News
